Thoughts about Positive vs Negative

Edmond P. DeRousse April 15, 2016 at 11:23 am

I try to keep this blog upbeat, positive, and instructive. Lately, though, I have been bothered by all the negativity I see around me. Perhaps it is the political season. Perhaps it is the era we live in. Regardless, I feel the need to write about it in this blog.

I try to always have a positive attitude. That positive attitude makes me feel good. I do not know about you, but I like feeling good.

I am not saying negative doesn’t just happen. It does and always will. But I believe if that’s all you see that’s all you know to give. One reaps what one sows. I also believe wallowing around in negative is easy. It is hard work to get rid of it.

Today it seems as if most of us prefer putting out the negative. Read a popular book. Watch a top selling movie. Watch TV. Watch the news. Negativity abounds. Our society is inundated with bad news, mad people, negative situations, and hopelessness. Good news, it seems, is seldom seen. I recently looked at the New York best sellers list for literature. The majority of the list were books about crime, murder mystery, sex, and horror. Feel good books were there but not prevalent.

As a writer, I am very conscious of the words I want people to read. I like feeling good and I want my readers to enjoy feeling good. I prefer to read words with a positive tone. I feel the same about the things I see in broadcast media. It is difficult to find feel good programs on television or see one at the theater.

Sometimes a word can bring up negative feelings. Tolerance is a word thrown around a lot today. What does that mean? If you looked it up in a dictionary you would find words like accepting, open-minded, understanding. Good words indeed. But I believe that word today appears to be mostly one direction. By that I mean this. If you are of a different opinion than me, I must be accepting, open-minded, and understanding of yours. I absolutely agree with that. But tolerance means there must be more than one way to think. Otherwise there would be nothing to be tolerant about because everyone thinks the same.

Of course, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. But often it seems as if the person presenting an opinion is expressing only negative and is unwilling to listen to and appreciate anything other than his or her own opinion. I believe that attitude gets in the way of tolerance.

As for me, there are times when I vehemently disagree with another. I respect that person’s right to express his/her different opinion. I also expect that person to respect my opinion.

You may agree or disagree with the words in this post. As I said before, I felt compelled to write them.

This negative post was very difficult for me to write. Negative makes me feel unhealthy. I much prefer healthy. So my future post will continue to be upbeat, positive and instructive.
